This week: embrace your inner peacock at The Colour Run, embrace bella coulture at the Italian Night Market, nerd out on The Drive, and more

The Colour Run – September 13

If life has seemed a little drab lately then The Colour Run might be the perfect cure. The self-labeled “happiest 5k on the planet” takes place this weekend at the PNE and will involve thousands of runners. Participants show up decked in white, but at each kilometer they’ll be covered in a different colour. The fun doesn’t end there, though. Check out their finish line party for entertainment and some guaranteed colourful characters. 

Dragon in the Garden – September 13

Don’t miss out on this unique soiree set in the stunning Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Garden. You may recognize celebrity chef Vikram Vij from our August issue (or because he’s awesome and everywhere). He’ll be serving up some specialty dishes inspired by the garden all to raise money for their educational programs. The night also promises to include live entertainment and a silent auction. 

Southlands Country Fair – September 14

Get your dose of rustic countryside without a long drive this Sunday at Southlands’ 13th Annual Country Fair. Entry to the fair is by donation, and they’ll have exciting onsite activities like midway games, a petting zoo, silent auctions and more. Show up early for a pony ride, or check out their live cow milking (don’t pretend you don’t want to watch) and horse entertainment. If you’re hungry you can even grab a bite from one of the fair’s food trucks. 

Autumn Shift Festival – September 14

Celebrate the shifting seasons on Main Street and enjoy an array of fun, family friendly events. They’ll have a European-style bazaar with live music and a Livable Laneways-sponsored market filled local vendors. The festival will also be hosting the Smoking Sausage BBQ Cook-Off where six different businesses will compete for the best sausage, as judged by you. Stick around to see tons of local musicians, and even a special flash mob.

UniverCity 10 Year Anniversary – September 16, 18, 19 and 20

Simon Fraser University’s UniverCity community is celebrating their 10th anniversary with four days of fun. Tuesday will feature a pancake breakfast and a chance to be in their commemorative 10th anniversary photo. Make reservations online for Thursday’s beer and wine tasting event with sommelier John Gerum, or catch Rio 2 at Friday’s outdoor movie night. Saturday will have a full-blown block party with entertainment by Bobs n’ Lolo, bouncy castles and a lot of food.

Vancouver Nerd Nite – September 17

Commercial Drive’s Café Deux Soleils is bringing back their popular Nerd Nites this coming Wednesday. Stop by for drinks and catch 20-minute informative talks from three very diverse presenters. Jackie Davis will talk about the pros of joining the circus, Gordon McGladdery will examine the qualities of sound, and science fiction writer Guy Immega will discuss alien languages.

Vancouver Public Library Fall Sidewalk Used Book Sale – September 18 to 20

If you need to replenish your bookshelves after some zealous summer reading then look no further than the Vancouver Public Library’s Fall Sidewalk Used Book Sale. This year’s sale will feature books, CDs, DVDs, and over 800 comic books at bargain prices. If you can wait till the 20th to drop by (who knows what you’ll miss out on), you’ll even find books and comics at half price. 

New Forms Festival – September 18 to 21

The New Forms Festival, one of the city’s most unique celebrations of art, is coming to Telus World of Science. The New Forms Society aims to combine visual art and music and encourage interdisciplinary art. The festival will feature collaborations between Canadian artists and international artist all from diverse artistic backgrounds. Closing off the event will be a free, allages party in Creekside Park with DJs Fett Burger and Soto.

Italian Night Market – September 19

Vancouver hosts lots of great night markets, and now the Italian Night Market has been added to the roster. The market takes place on the third Friday of every month at Il Centro Italian Cultural Centre. There’ll be fresh produce, local artisans, live musical entertainment and lots of Italian food. Admission to the event is free and open to everyone.

Pirate Adventures – Until September 28

Set sail on a swashbuckling adventure around False Creek with Pirate Adventures! The adventure begins with kids getting dressed up in their finest pirate attire – complete with face paint and pirate costumes. The 75-minute sail will be jam-packed with action with everything from treasure hunts to sea battles. They’re only sailing till the end of September, so book your spot fast to make sure you don’t miss out.
