Q: I have four apple trees that are growing a lot of moss and some fungus on them and would like to know the best way to remove them. I’m looking for something that is non toxic and environmentally safe as my kids do climb them.
Moss, in general, isn’t harmful to the well-being of your fruit tree – though moss-covered limbs can be hazardous to climb after a rainfall.
The best way to remove moss or other objects from a tree trunk is to physically scrape it off with a brush. Some have suggested using power washing, but this method can be damaging to the health of the tree.
Try thinning out some branches within the tree and in surrounding vegetation. The increased air-circulation may discourage moss from developing.
Safer’s De-Moss is an environmentally friendly product used specifically on moss. Read instructions before using.
