The films, shows and events at the Rio Theatre are in tune with the vibe of the Drive.
The Rio has been a Vancouver cinematic landmark since 1938
Vancouver’s Rio movie theatre goes beyond just films, hosting events, weekly cult-classic midnight shows, live entertainment, musicians, burlesque, comedy and pretty much anything else that can fit onto their stage and into their theatre. And all with a touch of character, creativity and heart.

in January 2009, Obama’s inauguration was screened to a crowd of 400 people via live satellite, and World Cup Soccer graced the screen several mornings this past June and July.
The theatre has been on the scene in Vancouver since 1938 and has been fully restored, bringing it up to the standards of the most ardent cinema buff. Each one of its 458 seats has adjustable armrests to let you snuggle with the person next to you—unless it’s a stranger, in which case you have the option to leave the arm rest in place.
Keeping with the tradition of independent theatres, the Rio offers inexpensive ticket prices and student discounts. Another route to cheap seats at the Rio: dress up! Every Friday at midnight, the Rio shows a double bill of cult classics, featuring pre-show live entertainment and $2 off the ticket price for the enthusiastic patrons who dress for the occasion.
Located on Broadway and Commercial, the Rio’s screenings and events reflect the pulse of this community driven, artistic neighbourhood.
On top of their regular first-run showings, the Rio likes to support the Vancouver arts community by screening films by local, independent filmmakers. There’s no doubt can always find something unique on the Rio’s schedule.
As of November 19 the theatre’s regular movie ticket prices go up to $12 for adults, but loyal customers who buy into the Members Only Movie Club will continue to pay the old price of $10, plus get free refills on popcorn and Coke and other special bonus offers.
