Downtown Vancouver’s hidden theatre gem

Nestled in downtown Vancouver, VanCity Theatre offers the best festival films in a plush—liquor-licensed—setting

Home to the Vancouver International Film Festival, VanCity Theatre is a hub for cinematic events and a purveyor of festival-style films from all corners of the world. The theatre was established in 2005 and incorporates the plush look of a vintage cinema, but with all of the bells and whistles of 21st-century technology and comfort.

Among VanCity Theatre’s many perks is their concession stand with a full liquor license. If you’d like some vino to accompany your French film, just grab a table in the concession lounge and the staff will cloak the area in a blackout curtain for optimal viewing on the large wall screen (pictured above).

Vancouver’s best movie theatre seats

With stadium-style seating and double armrests in the theatre, there isn’t a bad seat in the house. The decadent, red velvet curtains, spacious seating and high-tech sound system make for a luxurious viewing experience. It’s certainly not an atmosphere found elsewhere in the city.

More than just movies

The events at the VanCity Theatre are many; besides its film festival offerins, the theatre hosts parties, forums, private events and Cinema Salon, where once a month a special guest presents their favourite movie, followed by drinks, snacks and discussion. Vancouver’s own Gregor Robertson presented a movie last year.

The lounge and entrance area have plenty of seating and tables for pre- and post-movie socializing.
