National Puppy Day is here, so in celebration, we chatted with some of Vancouver’s most famous dog owners about their precious pooches (window.NREUM||(NREUM={})).loader_config={xpid:"UAMFUl5VGwAGVFVXAAg="};window.NREUM||(NREUM={}),__nr_require=func
National Puppy Day is on Sunday, March 23 (who knew?) and while it’s not a national holiday, we’ll use any excuse to look at pictures of adorable pups. We talked to a few of Vancouver’s most famous dog owners to find out what they love about their furry best friends.
Claire Newell loves to spend time with her dog, Joey. “It amazes me how much our family dog, Joey, enriches our lives! Whether he’s making me laugh playing in the park or curled up in my lap on the couch, his little face always brightens my day.”
Steve Darling is the proud owner of a chocolate lab named Lucy. Here they are enjoying some quality couch time.
“It’s hard to imagine life without Stanley (an Airedale Terrier), he’s such an important part of our family. I love his kind eyes and his ability to read each of us so well. Stanley is amazing with our three kids; he is loyal, patient and incredibly loving. Stanley takes his job of family protector seriously; he is a true terrier . . . stubborn at times and also a tiny bit bad. That’s why we love him so much.”
TV style expert Susie Wall loves her 10-year-old English lab Ojai (pronounced OH-hi) – named after the small California town northwest of Los Angeles.
“The joy that Ojai (or O-Dog, as she’s also known), has brought to our lives and to our kids’ lives has been immeasurable. They say you should strive to be the person your dog thinks you are – if we’re anywhere close to that then we’re doing all right.
“We got Buddy about six years ago from a woman who regularly rescues dachshunds. Weirdly, he’s not a dachshund he’s a fox terrier/Jack Russell and we think he is 12. He has long legs that are put on a little wrong (no confirmation prizes here) and when he reaches full speed they tend to resemble pieces of cooked spaghetti. He has his own version of a nightly turn-down service that entails a made bed turned into a big mess of covers and pillows as he roots and thrashes around on his way to finding just the right spot. He will eat absolutely anything. I mean anything. He likes all people except postal workers. If you say the words, “coyote,” “raccoon” or “cat” he immediately jumps to attention. He listens to conversations and watches TV. The latter activity is what led us to discover the thing he hates the most: chickens. He’s weird and absurd, but I love him.”
“I have two dogs: a mini-schnauzer named Webster and an Irish wolfhound named Finnian, who is a giant 130-lb. baby. They are (along with our two-and-a-half-year-old daughter) our family. We hike the North Shore, explore beaches and they generally remind us to romp and play! They are so full of joy and love — we are lucky to have them. Since Teagan was born, Finn has also become her giant dress up doll (she likes hats; Finn... not so much) and she reads to him every day. Occasionally he steals her cookie. So it all works out!”
