So you have some idea of the fashion design talents flourishing in Vancouver. You realize the importance of supporting local business. You’ve heard the buzz about ecofashion and the benefits of organic fabrics. And you are happy to know that people in BC are channelling their creativity into saving the environment.

Yet somehow when the shopping bug bites, you usually end up at the big chains, rifling through the mass-produced fare you’ve grown accustomed to. Or you may find yourself idling at the border waiting to embark on a outlet mall road trip.

Old habits die hard, and sometimes you just don’t have the time to investigate which boutiques carry which local brands or what the name is of that indie Vancouver fashion designer you came across last week online.

But you’re in luck! From August 21–23, some of the best and brightest local fashion talents will be showcased and celebrated at Spend on Trend at the Scotiabank Dance Theatre. At Spend on Trend, you’ll get to preview fall’s style trends and get your hands on some truly original pieces—all while supporting local independent designers. Just in time too—with the heat wave is over, it’s time to start planning our fall wardrobe!

Here, then, are just some of the designers to watch out for. Be sure to visit the Spend on Trend website to get event details and a list of exhibitors.

The kdon collection from designer, stylist and Project Runway Canada contestant Kim Cathers is for the fearless, progressive stylista who embraces bold, texturized, dimensional statement pieces.

2. Davie and Chiyo

Davie and Chiyo’s gorgeous handmade clutch purses are not only pleasing to the eyes, their luxurious textures are a joy to handle as well.

3. Chloe Angus Design

You won’t believe how many elegant styles the Chloe Angus bamboo button wrap can transform into. From the beach to the cafe to the office, the seemingly simple wrap has you covered. Even better: it comes in a myriad of enticing colours! Definitely worth checking out.

We love belts both for their practical function as well as their versatility as accessories. But Catalyst Reaction shows us that they can be works of art as well. Don’t miss the distinctive leather belts and cuffs with West Coast-inspired designs.

5. Filou Designs

Filou Design’s handcrafted solid sterling silver and 24K gold vermeil jewelry feature nature-inspired designs from the whimsical to the elegant. With simple lines that somehow manages to jump out and look almost animated, these necklaces will add sparkle to almost any outfit.

Spend on Trend - Nate Organics hat

Organic cotton t-shirts by Nate Organics make a statement through stylish graphics and tongue-in-cheek humour. The Re-Find line upcycles vintage silk ties into unique accents for fedoras, tanks and dresses.

7. Cici

I adore the Cici label because the pieces are exquisitely cut, elevating  classic appeal with trendy elements. Graceful sophistication with a flirty wink.

8. Chai Design

I always slow down when walking by the windows of sari shops. How can you not be dazzled by the rich colours and beautiful patterns of the fabric? Now thanks to Chai Design, which uses recycled sari fabrics to create contemporary city-wear, we can incorporate these exotic prints into our everyday wardrobe.
