5 Reasons to Visit Point Roberts

An oceanfront vacation community on the coast of Point Roberts, Seabright Farm Cottages offer a memorable indoor and outdoor living experience

Whether you’re looking to get away from it all, reconnect with nature or enjoy
adventures in wine or golf, Point Roberts has everything you need

Arguably “the most Canadian part of America”, Point Roberts seems to be a cartographer’s blunder, as it is part of the United States. This southernmost tip of the Tsawwassen peninsula may not be a destination that first comes to mind when planning a getaway. However, with plenty of great weather, peaceful surroundings and endless activities to enjoy, your opportunity to escape from it all might be just a short, ferry-less drive away. Here are five reasons why “Point Bob” should be on the top of your weekend must-visit list.

Parks and Beaches

Try swimming or skim-boarding at the popular Maple Beach, or take in eagle nests and great views of Mount Baker along the rockier shore at Lily Point Marine Park. If you’re looking add a little action to the kids’ day, stop by Lighthouse Park Beach and enjoy driftwood collecting or rock-skipping, use the boat launch or go fishing or crabbing off the new pier. Lighthouse Park’s boardwalk also often plays host to community events such as Family Fun Fest after the Fourth of July Parade and Point Roberts’ Arts and Music Festival. And don’t forget about Monument Park, where you can enjoy an afternoon swim or picnic; nor fail to take a walk on the amazing tidelands at South Beach.

Adventure and Serenity

Getaways are meant to be a break from the hectic routine of daily life, but many of us still like to keep a little bit busy, and for that purpose Point Roberts offers endless activities to enjoy. From biking or horseback riding on the trails at Lily Point and Monument Park, to kayaking from Point Roberts Marina or camping overnight at Lighthouse Marine Park, no day will be slow.

Unless you want it to be. The international border has blocked development from this charming rural village; you’ll be astounded at the low and scattered buildings, the open green spaces, the sea breezes, and the peace. Perfect if your “activity” is hard-core relaxing!

Wine

There is a reason why Liberty Wine Merchants, the largest chain of private wine retailers in Western Canada, started in Point Roberts. That original Liberty Merchants store—along with Brewster’s, Larry’s Liquor and other purveyors in this cute little village—offers a tremendous selection of wines from Washington, Oregon and California that are rarely seen in B.C. stores, and at lower prices that are guaranteed to make Canadians very happy. Remember to check your customs limit before getting too excited!

Golfing and Boating

Named to Golf Digest’s 2008/2009 “Best Places to Play” list and considered one of the most unique golf courses in the U.S, Point Roberts Golf and Country Club is a must-play link. And if your golf game isn’t going as well as you had hoped, hang in there, because when playing between 5,144 and 6,868 yards, the breathtaking views of the ocean will lift your spirits. Point Roberts also has one of the premier marinas in the Northwest, located perfectly for easy access to both the San Juan’s and the Gulf Islands. Fishing and sightseeing charters are available, or stop by with your own boat (and remember to fill up on the cheap gas).

Wildlife

From the Orca pods frolicking offshore to the many fearless resident bald eagles soaring through the sky, Point Roberts is a nature lover’s paradise. The sandy bluffs of South Beach promote an active marine ecology and the local waters abound with oysters, crabs, salmon, sand dollars and starfish. Throw in the acres of forested trails, friendly deer and sometimes overly-friendly raccoons in the amazing ecosystem that exists in and around Lily Point Marine Park, and Mother Nature can be the star of the show during your visit.
