Some herbs literally self-sow and are best kept in containers

Most herbs thrive in just-average soil with good drainage and full sun.

Super-easy choices with flowers that attract beneficial insects are borage, chives, mint, lemon balm, oregano, sage, thyme. Lemon balm easily self-sows – to the point that some consider it a weed.

Ditto for mint: while vigorous, it’s easily controlled by keeping it to containers.
