The Perennial Plant Association gave the title to the rhizomatous plant that bears flowers across a range of colours including purple, white, yellow, green and pink. The 2004 perennial of the year was Japanese painted fern (Athyrium niponicum var. pictum) and in 2003 a Shasta daisy called Leucanthemum ‘Becky’ was the association’s choice.
