Plant Companions: Alyssum with Melons and Squash

Squash are deep-rooted plants and benefit from the protection provided by shallow-rooted, carpet-forming alyssum. It forms a barrier to summer heat and inhibits weeds, but it does not over-compete for water or fertilizer. Alyssum also attracts many beneficial predatory and pollinating insects, increasing yields. If your squash or melons have been low producers, consider picking up a package of alyssum and spreading it throughout the garden; alyssum and squash are the best of garden friends.
