Bellflowers thrive in sun and shade

What better choice to plant in your old hiking boots than one of the wee bellflowers native to the mountains of eastern Europe?

While some bellflowers are robust perennials that reach 1.8 m (6 ft.) in height, species such as Campanula portenschlagiana and C. porscharskyana live high in the mountains and hunker down to avoid cold winds.

Needless to say, both are very hardy to zone 4. They thrive in full sun or part shade, in moist, well-drained soil. Their flower colours, usually blue or purple, appear in summer.
