The next best thing to enjoying a meal from the garden is telling the story later, again and again reliving the sensual pleasure of a shared food experience.
Food is a big deal in my family. And the harvest season means party season. Recently, my grandparents hosted a ‘field and pond’ feast, inviting local chefs to come pick from their garden and fish from their pond the evening’s meal, which they all then prepared and ate together.
Since then, I have heard retellings of that day several times already, and know I’ll hear them plenty more times again. In fact, I look forward to it—it’s one of the best parts.
The magic of sharing what we grow and nourishing ourselves is best articulated in the language of flavour—pure, delicious flavour. But the next best thing is telling the story later, again and again reliving the sensual pleasure of a shared food experience.
In the coming weeks, I invite you to tell your tales of sharing your bounty from the harvest season over a meal, through preserving or dropping off bushels of fruit at the local food bank. The best examples we’ll select to be featured and shared in our blog (with photos, if available).
