Make sure you come hungry to Burnaby’s The Heights

Eating out in North Burnaby’s The Heights is like discovering a hidden treasure in your own backyard

The Heights has oodles of variety, whether you’re in the mood for burgers, Mexican food or sushi; a casual experience or something a little more upscale.

Here are a few of the culinary surprises this neighbourhood offers.

Los Compadres

This Mexican joint has some of the friendliest, most pleasant staff in all of The Heights. And you’ll be smiling too, especially once you try the mole.

Los Compadres’ rich, savory chocolate sauce, which is slathered on some of its enchiladas, is flavourful and silky in texture. The Tortilla Soup makes a great lunch all on its own and offers just the right amount spicy kick.

Burgers, Etc.

A meat lover’s paradise, this barbecue house serves up burgers of unfeasible proportions. The restaurant’s motto is to “keep it fresh and simple” and this is exactly what it does−in spades.

Owner Calvin and the rest of his staff are always smiling as they dish up the goods, whether you go for the burger and fries or opt instead for the “etc.,” a selection of smoky meats served up in classic styles.

The Pulled Pork Cheese Fries will undoubtedly replace whatever your current culinary guilty pleasure is.

The Pear Tree

If you’d like to make an impression or celebrate a special occasion, this is the place to do it. The stylish interior belies the restaurant’s relaxed vibe.

Owners Stephanie and Scott Jaeger, both active in the local food community, bring comfortable surroundings and local, organic, seasonal food to their tables. The dishes at The Pear Tree are well thought out, beautifully presented, and the wine list pulls the whole experience together.

Cioffi’s

For those who enjoy the DIY dinner, stop in at Cioffi’s. This is the spot to get all the ingredients you need to cook like a pro. The store has two parts: the deli, which has a mind boggling selection of meats, cheese, olives, and breads; and the meat market and kitchen, which carries natural, free range, local meats from around the Lower Mainland, as well as some prepared foods if you’re in a hurry.

Whether you’re preparing antipasti for a party or picnic, or you’re looking for something to toss on the grill, you’ll find no shortage of options here.

Take Sushi

One of the true hidden gems in The Heights, this place takes fresh seafood very seriously. Tucked back a few short steps from the sidewalk, the dishes at Take are a delight of balanced colours, flavours and textures.

You’ll find the classics, including some of the lightest, most delicate tempura around, as well as more inventive dishes if you’re feeling adventurous. Fulfill your sushi cravings any day but Monday, when Take is closed.
