Recipe: Strawberry-Avocado Salsa

Strawberries give this savoury salsa a sweet twist

Juicy, in-season strawberries are irresistible in custards and trifles, but this easy-to-whip-up summer salsa proves they can star in a savoury dish just as well

The sweet berries pair up perfectly with smooth avocado, zippy jalapeno and fresh cilantro. Serve with grilled chicken or fish.


  • 2 cups (470 ml) strawberries, diced
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) cilantro, chopped
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) chopped red onion
  • 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and finely chopped
  • 2 avocados, pitted and diced
  • 1 tsp. (5 ml) brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp. (30 ml) lime juice
  • 2 tsp. (10 ml) finely grated lime peel
  • 1 tbsp. (15 ml) olive oil
  • Dash of hot pepper sauce (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste


Gently toss together all ingredients and serve immediately.

Makes three cups (710 ml).
