Nothing beats the summer heat like an ice-cold smoothie. Satisfyingly creamy, filling and versatile enough to suit every craving, they’re the perfect way to start your day, fill the 3 pm hunger gap or sate a sweet tooth.

From traditional berry smoothies to those with more of a kick, these six recipes will turn your blender into your new BFF.

Triple Berry Smoothie

Go traditional with this classic triple berry smoothie.


  • 1 cup mixed blackberries and raspberries
  • 5 medium strawberries
  • 1 cup crushed ice
  • ½ cup nonfat Greek yogurt

Note: Using a pre-bought bag of frozen mixed berries works if you don’t have fresh fruit, just eliminate the ice.

Tropical Smoothie

For a smoothie with a tang, blend up this tropical concoction.


  • ½ mango (ripe, peeled and seeded)
  • ½ papaya (ripe, peeled and seeded)
  • 1 banana (ripe)
  • ¼ cup orange juice (freshly squeezed)
  • ½ cup skim milk
  • ¼ cup nonfat yogurt
  • 1 tsp honey
  • 2 cups ice

Note: Putting the ice at the bottom of the blender, near the blades, makes it much easier to crush.

Detox Smoothie

Cleanse your system with this green detox smoothie.


  • 1 handful of spinach
  • 1 handful of mint
  • 1 handful of parsley
  • 1 handful of kale
  • ½ cucumber, peeled
  • 1 large celery stalk
  • 1-2 cups apple juice (depending on your desired sweetness)

Note: After blending all the ingredients together until smooth, serve over ice to make this smoothie extra cold.

Peanut Butter Smoothie

Start your day with a dose of protein in this peanut butter smoothie.


  • 1 banana
  • 1 cup milk
  • ¼ cup peanut butter
  • Honey to taste
  • 1 cup ice cubes

Note: Switch up the milk for 1 cup chocolate almond milk or chocolate soy milk for a sweeter treat.

Coffee Smoothie

If you need a little kickstart to your day, this coffee smoothie is sure to do the trick.


  • 1 frozen banana, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 1 cup of brewed coffee, cooled
  • 1½ cups of crushed ice
  • ½ cup vanilla-flavoured whey protein powder or instant vanilla pudding mix
  • 1 tablespoon ground flax seeds

Note: Store any leftover coffee you made the morning before in the fridge, and then you’re saved the task of brewing more when you want this smoothie.

Chocolate Smoothie

When you’re craving something sweet, skip the chocolate bar and go for this cocoa smoothie instead.


  • ¾ cup cashew milk or milk of choice
  • 1 large frozen banana
  • 1 tablespoon dark chocolate chips
  • 2 teaspoons cocoa powder
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon

Note: Add 1 cup of cold brewed coffee to this smoothie to create a mocha blend.
